So you’re at a stage that no one needs to convince you that there are bargains to be had at police vehicle auctions. Maybe the only thing you really still need is a good auction blueprint plan to follow which will turn your work into money saved. If you’re strategy includes the following 4 steps, you will be well placed to achieving your goals set for these auctions.

The Inspection

This is a gift from the police department - the opportunity to inspect the ins and outs of the car. Make use if it!! Granted, you normally don’t have the privilege to test drive the car, but you can start the machine and listen for any suspicious sounds and creaks.

The VIN

Where most people get into trouble is when they overlook the fundementals. If you need an overview report on the auto’s history (on issues such as if it’s been stolen, damaged, etc), you can obtain this with the vehicles registration number at no cost. This report provides valuable insights into the cars’ history and can ultimately be a dealbreaker for you in deciding on whether to bid on a vehicle at police auctions or not

Researching the Auto’s Title

Granted the police department does do a little bit of work to confirm if there are any outstanding liens on the car. They generally don’t however do a very good job of it. Rather check this for yourself as it’s a gutting experience to have the auto that you just bought repossessed by a creditor.

Valuing the Vehicle

Going into the auction without a good reasonable estimate of the valuation of the car you’re interested in would be suicide. It’s very similar to running around in a bear infested forrest, completely covered in honey. If you don’t have a benchmark valuation handy for the car, the chances are very good that you will bid until you win. This strategy will lead you to buying the car at a price much more than what it’s worth. The conclusion is simple. Know the valuation and DO NOT bid anything more than this on the car.

With all of this information you will usually be perfectly prepped for a standard police vehicle auction. Many people also get caught up with the events on the day – especially true for live public events. Best advice is to stay calm and focussed on your game plan. No one is more successful than the calm and collected bidder who normally walks away smiling in the sunset.
